John Travolta has dismissed gay sex claims made against him by former employee Douglas Gotterba.

Earlier this year, it was claimed by Gotterba that the Hollywood star had been romantically involved with his ex-pilot - but Travolta has hit back at the suggestion, saying there is no foundation to the rumour.

He told The Daily Beast: "This is every celebrity's Achilles heel.

"It's just about people wanting money. That's all. It happens on many levels."

Travolta added that he's grown used to rumours circulating about his personal life and he's now largely unaffected by such speculation.

The actor - who is married to Kelly Preston - explained: "Also, I don't care that much about it. Other people may attack it back more than I do, but I let all the media stuff go a long time ago because I can't control it.

"I think that's why it persists, to some degree."

However, Travolta, 60, did say that he is bothered when his family life is brought into the public spotlight.

He added: "Sex stuff is always going to be interesting to somebody, but you stay away from family."

In 2012, Gotterba said that Travolta’s lawyer, Marty Singer, sent him a threatening letter after a National Enquirer interview in which Gotterba claimed he had engaged in a sexual relationship with the actor shortly after he started working for him in 1981. According to Gotterba, Travolta had confided in him that he “preferred men” shortly after tying the knot with actress Kelly Preston in 1991.

In the same year, a man who wrote the book 'You'll Never Spa in This Town Again', published in February 2012, claimed Travolta and his lawyer spread false statements about his mental health, according to court documents obtained by Reuters, as it contained revelations of the man's alleged gay encounters with the Travolta.

The book was published three months before two unidentified male masseurs filed sexual assault lawsuits against the actor. Both accusers swiftly dropped their lawsuits in May after doubt was cast on the details of their alleged encounters.
