Former reality TV star Josh Duggar, who has admitted cheating on his wife following reports he was a subscriber to the hacked Ashley Madison affair website, has entered rehab.

His parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar released a statement on Wednesday on the Duggar Family website that read: "Yesterday Josh checked himself into a long-term treatment centre. For him it will be a long journey toward wholeness and recovery. We pray that in this he comes to complete repentance and sincere change."

Duggar admitted in a statement last week to having cheated on his wife after news broke of his subscription to the Ashley Madison affair website, and apologised for being “the biggest hypocrite ever.”

His indiscretions snowballed into a scandal of epic proportions this week, after adult entertainment actress Danica Dillon claimed that Duggar offered her almost R20 000 for “an evening with her”, after revealing that he had followed her career closely and was a fan of her work. She revealed that their sexual encounter was “terrifying” and "traumatic", due to Duggar’s extreme sexual tastes.

Dillon also claimed that their sexual activities took place when Duggar’s wife was five months pregnant.
