Welcome to the celebrity circus Trevor Noah.

A day after South Africa’s favourite comedian was unveiled as the new host of The Daily Show, he has been accused of sexism and anti-semitism.

Some twitter users are adamant that Noah isn’t a suitable candidate to replace Jon Stewart and have dug up old tweets as proof.

One Twitter user pointed out Noah’s supposed anti-semitism because of this quip: “South Africans know how to recycle like israel knows how to be peaceful.”

“Sad that some1 as ignorant as @TrevorNoah will host @TheDailyShow w/ comments like these. #Israel @StandWithUs” he wrote.

This one probably didn’t help: “Messi gets the ball and the real players try foul him, but Messi doesn't go down easy, just like jewish chicks.”

Another jumped on the bandwagon because Noah had tweeted: “Behind every successful Rap Billionaire is a double as rich Jewish man. #BeatsByDreidel”.

He commented: “The guy seems to have a problem with Jews.... What's that called again? #DailyShow @Trevornoah”.

Another Twitter user wrote: “I wonder how long it will take @ComedyCentral and @TheDailyShow to realize their new host is a racist. #TrevorNoah”. Some even went as far as calling him a “jew hater”.

Even comedienne Roseanne Barr waded into the debate.

“@Trevornoah U should cease sexist & anti semitic 'humor' about jewish women & Israel. #comedyCentral”.

Later, she added: “F**k this pr*ck”.

The accusation of sexism was sparked by tweets like: “A hot white woman with ass is like a unicorn. Even if you do see one, you'll probably never get to ride it”.

Noah’s many fans however, took issue with the online campaign against him.

“Haters trawled through @Trevornoah's old jokes to trip him up after #trevornoah got #thedailyshow,” wrote one supporter.

Another questioned why the subject of Noah’s jokes was an issue now.

“So whats the excitement with #TrevorNoah's old tweets, oh i see JEALOUSY !!!!”.
