CHILD star Ricardo Groenewald died at Tygerberg Hospital on Wednesday night after losing his battle with stage four cancer at the age of 43 – leaving behind his wife, Helen, and four children.

He was diagnosed two months ago, and was being treated at Tygerberg Hospital.

The young Cape Town singer rose to stardom with his hit, I Love You Daddy, in the 1980s.

Helen said she was at peace with her husband’s death.

“I’m at peace because on his last days before he died, we spent a lot of time together. And the support I got from friends and family is what I needed to cope with my loss. I’m asking God to give me strength so I can be strong for my children.”

Family and friends gathered at his bedside, praying and singing. Helen said: “I feel God was the ultimate source in this journey. Ricardo departed peacefully and that was important to witness. The spiritual family ushered him to our Father's arms.”

Family spokesman Pastor Julian Claassen said they had organised a tribute concert for Ricardo last Sunday. Musicians and fans had come out in support.

“The highlight for him must have been when his 11-year-old son sang his famous song, I Love You Daddy. His face lit up when he heard his son.”
