WHEN Steve Hofmeyr announced on Twitter that he had been robbed, sympathetic posts trickled in. But he probably didn’t expect that a wave of negative tweets from his detractors would soon follow.

The singer announced the robbery at his holiday home by tweeting: “Sopas beroof in ons vakansiehuis. Die stank hang nog in die huis. (We were just robbed in our holiday home. The stench still lingers.)”

In a series of tweets, he said his TV and XBox had been stolen and that he and his family were safe and unharmed.

His critics didn’t seem worried. Many called it “karma” or “lovely” and made jokes about the singer, who courted controversy by singing Die Stem during his live performances.

He also recently tweeted: “Sorry to offend, but in my books Blacks were the architects of Apartheid. Go figure.”

Following his robbery, @thatwallace tweeted: “Anyone with knowledge about the people responsible for the @steve_hofmeyr break-in, please come forward? Want to give those men a Bells.”

@Msrell0w said: “Lol so no one is sympathising with Steve Hofmeyr, that’s what you get from being heartless.”

Her sentiments were echoed by @leonjacobs: “Let’s face it, Steve Hofmeyr was the architect of robbery in his home because he owns things.”

Many tweets continued in a mocking vein:

@DavieDuck: Burglars broke into Steve Hofmeyr’s home. They stole several of his albums, a Blou Bul jersey, an old SA flag, but thankfully, no valuables.

@evanblecher: I reckon he blames @chestermissing and that failed protection order business!

@DeepFriedMan: “It’s the white genocide.” “Yes, sir, you’ve said that already. We just asked what was taken” – Steve Hofmeyr reporting his break-in to SAPS.

@thatTallCPTguy: @steve_ hofmeyr Condolences for your ordeal, but as apartheid was black people’s fault, so this robbery is YOUR fault. Accept responsibility.

@TheButtaSide: Heard the guys who robbed @steve_ hofmeyr were actually looking for his dignity but couldn’t find any…
