‘Moeder Moed’ wins accolades for actors

Moeder Moed en Haar Kinders (a translation of Brecht’s Mother Courage), Santa Gamka and Die Seemeeu (directed by this year’s National Arts Festival Theatre Young Artist, Christiaan Olwagen) were all honoured with three awards following this year’s Absa Klein Karoo National Arts Festival held in April. The winners were announced earlier this month.

Three actors in Moeder Moed en Haar Kinders, adapted and translated by the Saartjie Botha and directed by Jerry Mofokeng, were rewarded with top honours. These include Aletta Bezuidenhout (Best Actress), Cintaine Schutte (Best Supporting Actress) and Deon Lotz (Best Supporting Actor). Schutte and Lotz also received their prizes for Die Seemeeu.

l Albert Pretorius was rewarded as Best Actor for his performances in DieSeemeeu and Buite Blaf die Honde Swart.

l For the second year in a row, Jaco Bouwer received the Best Director accolade also for two productions, Buite Blaf die Honde Swart and Santa Gamka.

l Santa Gamka, a solo piece written by Eben Venter, was crowned as Best Debut at the Festival and also awarded the Herrie, which indicates barrier-shifting work.

l In Glas, written by Nicola Hanekom was rewarded as Best Production.

l Schalk Bezuidenhout with his production Lewendig was recognised as a rising star.

l The Best Music Production was awarded to Schalk Joubert who compiled and produced Al lê die Berge Nog so Blou.

l Bach Vandag, a organ recital by Winand Grundling, received the Best Musical Performance award.

l Nathani Lüneburg’s animation and video exhibition, As die Vlooie Byt in La La Land, walked off with the fine art prize.
