DESPITE some controversy surrounding his collaboration with Woolworths, Pharrell Williams was spotted partying it up with locals at Cape Town nightclub Living Room at the weekend.
The 42-year-old global star recently made news in South Africa after Woolworths announced that he would be collaborating with the retail chain as their new style director. The partnership would see Woolworths introduce a new sustainable line of clothing.
Williams is “proud” of his collaboration and shared the news on Twitter last week, saying: “Proud to collab with retailer @Woolworths_SA. Are you with us, South Africa? See you in September! #PharrellWithWoolies”
Williams was referring to a special concert to be held in September in Cape Town for 5 000 Woolworths customers to mark the collaboration.
The news was not well received by all as Palestine solidarity organisation Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) South Africa released a statement shortly after the announcement calling for Williams to boycott Woolworths, until the company divested from Israel.
BDS said: “Given our history, as South Africans, we call for the boycott of companies, such as Woolworths, who continue to trade with Apartheid Israel. We trust that Pharrell Williams will heed our call.”
But this did not stop the Happy hit maker from enjoying a night out on the town.
Williams spent Friday night at the nightclub with his friend and fellow musician Jennifer Hudson, who the club referred to as his “lady friend” in the picture’s caption.
The club removed the post from their Facebook page shortly after and the manager also refused to comment.
The appearance was confirmed by Twitter users, with one finding it funny and another not believing the news.
DJ Milo said in his tweet: “Living Room claimed to have Pharell and Jennifer in attendance. I don’t believe it.”
While Dillen A. Arnolds tweeted: “Jennifer Hudson and Pharell Williams were in Living Room last night. Lol!”
