Durban - US rapper Rick Ross is back in South Africa.

The international rapping sensation is headlining the annual youth hip-hop festival taking place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday afternoon.

This is the third time Ross will be performing in the country. He performed in Cape Town in 2010 and in Nelspruit in 2013.

The platinum-selling, Grammy Award-winning rapper will be performing alongside the cream of the hip-hop acts from around the country.

Rapper Kwesta has been named among the South African artists who are to perform at the festival.

Ross was scheduled to arrive in the country on Saturday morning.

He will play a full hour’s set at the festival, and head back to the US on Sunday.

Last year’s youth festival included about 15 live performances attended by 6 000 fans.

This year, however, organisers have decided to add an international act to spice up the event and try to attract a bigger crowd.

Kwesta says he is looking forward to performing his afternoon with the famed rapper.

“I think Rick Ross is a global star who has managed to make music in genres other than hip hop. That will add a lot of weight to this festival.

“I love his music and bump a Rick Ross joint here or there. He has a following here and, together with the South African artists, it will be a great show. Ross’s last album was successful, so it’s not like we are getting a washed-up artist.

“It’s been a great year for hip hop in South Africa and a lot of hip-hop cats will be there.” – Additional reporting by Munya Vomo
