Radio presenter and traditional singer Saba Mbixane, who has died, played an important role in promoting agriculture, Eastern Cape rural development MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane said on Friday.

The 54-year-old Umhlobo Wenene FM presenter died in hospital on Thursday from injuries sustained in a motorbike accident over two weeks ago.

“His unexpected death has robbed us of a skilled, committed broadcaster, who played an important role in encouraging people of this country to take agriculture seriously and who proved to many that there was a bright future in agriculture,” Qoboshiyane said in a statement.

“As we mourn his passing, we wish to send our heartfelt condolences to his family, his wife, children, colleagues at the SABC, and all his friends in the traditional music fraternity, particularly his group dancing the increasingly popular Imfene traditional dance.”

Mbixane was a farmer committed to food production and rural development, he said.

“We appeal to the people of the province to learn from Mr Mbixane's self-determination, most importantly, we encourage them to learn from his commitment to produce crops, livestock and not to be a weekend farmer.”

Qoboshiyane said Mbixane's commitment and interest in the department's work was appreciated. He wanted farmers to learn from him and produce their own vegetables, fruit, and livestock.

“We will surely miss his informative and curious mind, which was always looking for information to share with his listeners,” he said. – Sapa
