Muvhango, the popular drama series, plans to retire the character of Doobsie in honour of Lindiwe Chibi, says the SABC.

Chibi, who played the original character, passed away on Wednesday night at Chris Hani-Baragwanath hospital after suffering from pneumonia.

The 31-year-old actress had a close brush with death two years ago when she was shot in the head by her boyfriend outside her Soweto home.

She had been recovering from the shooting since then. Although the left half of her body was left paralysed, it was expected that she would return to acting following extensive physiotherapy.

Chibi began her career in Ekuseni, a play, at the Civic Theatre in 1995. Thereafter she appeared in other plays including Game for which she won a best actress award and A Street Car Named Desire, a classic by Tennessee Williams.

Executive producer of Muvhango, Duma Ndlovu, says they have suspended production for Thursday in her honour.
