Sydney - Britain’s Prince Harry spent an hour mingling with Aboriginal people in a remote part of Western Australia on Thursday, media reported.

The prince, who began a four-month secondment to the Australian army this week, was in the area with the indigenous North-West Mobile Force (NORFORCE) infantry regiment, broadcaster ABC said.

Locals were pleased to meet Harry, who is fourth in line to the British throne, according to the report.

“It was pretty exciting, especially for the kids … We weren’t expecting him and he just rocked up with NORFORCE,” Barry Truss, a Wuggubun resident, was quoted by ABC as saying.

“We’ve invited him back again sometime. He’d love to – he said he’d love to live out this way, to get away from all the media.”

ABC said Harry later flew south to Kununurra and spent time fishing.

The Australian Defence Force promised to provide him with a challenging attachment, with deployments in Darwin, Perth and Sydney.

The second son of Prince Charles and the late princess Diana is due to conclude a 10-year career in the British military in June.

He is expected to visit New Zealand after his Australian attachment.
