THE finale of this year’s Big Brother Africa showcase airs on Sunday and we take this opportunity to look back at the season that was. Marred by several challenges, some of which threatened to see the season aborted, Big Brother Africa 2014 has been quite an entertaining show. Here are some of the key points to remember.

Fire

How can we talk about Big Brother Africa 2014 and not talk about the fire that blazed at Sasani Studios just days before the launch? Thank goodness it didn’t happen with people inside the house. As with any business, when you suffer major setbacks like this, it’s how you proceed that determines if you are made for that business. The people behind BBA definitely rose to the occasion and made a plan B which gave us a memorable season.

Ebola

While the African continent feared for the spread of Ebola, no one really though what it would mean for Big Brother Africa. We forgot that contestants came from all over the continent and some even from affected countries. Thanks to the research of the people at Multichoice, it came out that not all East African countries were in the red. The show went on and everyone is fine.

Talent Intro

Hotshots has been this year’s theme and it would have meant nothing if the people involved did not live up to that title. So one by one, the contestants all entered with a talent of some sort and the audience rated them. This was the beginning of the competition and they have all since been aware of each other’s capabilities.

Duration

Thanks to the fire disrupting the original plans, the show could not run for the usual three months so we only got two thirds of that period. Starting on October 5 and ending on Sunday, it felt really short, but it wasn’t short on drama.

Old housemates

Just to boost the morale of the remaining contestants, BBA producers brought in former contestants who included Elikem, Uti and Vimbai who also pretended to be competing all over again. That caused fireworks in the house.

Sex

Save for a few kisses here and there, we did not have as many sexual escapades as we had in past seasons. It seems like people are beginning to realise that their mothers are watching.

Musicians and songs

Congolese singer Fally Ipupa and Nigerian crooner Diamond stepped into the house to help compose songs which affirmed why they are superstars.

Freeze Challenge

The latest freeze challenge was brutal. Big Brother called it, all contestant froze like mannequins and their relatives stepped in for visits. They were asked to speak to the contestants, but the contestants were to stay in their frozen state till the visitors left. Tears were the order of the day.

IK

For fantastically hosting this show for six years straight now, IK deserves a mention. KB’s shoes were hard to fill, but the Nigerian host is doing so well that it will be a long time before they think of replacing him.

• Big Brother airs all week on DStv Channels 197 and 198.
