A Cape Town couple planned to celebrate Valentine’s Day by parachuting from a plane together.

But Saturday’s temperamental weather put a stop to their leap of faith and they decided to make their way to an upmarket Camps Bay hotel. But a romantic lunch was not on the cards. Instead they took a dare of a different sort – they auditioned for a new South African reality show aimed at testing their bond by putting them and other couples through various thrilling challenges.

Eight couples from around the country will be picked for Power Couple, which will air on M-Net in August. They will live in a villa in Cape Town and the contest involves each partner betting thousands of rands on the other.

The success or failure of a challenge will affect how much money they bank or whether they get eliminated. The draw card?

A prize of R1 million.

Yesterday Nash, 35, and Nunu, 27, who declined to give their surnames, were among many the Cape Town couples who spent a part of their Valentine’s Day at the Bay Hotel trying to impress the judges.

Nash, 35, a risk manager who also celebrated her birthday on Saturday, said she was willing to test the limits to get to compete in Power Couple.

“The only thing that is going to stop me is if I’m not able to stay out of work,” she joked.

Nash and Nunu, 27, have been together for four-and-a-half years.

Another couple that auditioned were Justine Letard, 27, and Llewellan Vance, 32, of Hout Bay.

“We’re an outgoing and adventurous couple. We’re looking for a new life challenge,” Vance said.

The two have been together for two years.

She also once ate a cricket and said she was up to eating more bugs if necessary.

The next auditions will be held at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Wednesday and the Indaba Hotel in Johannesburg on February 28.
