WITH a new year, expectations are often heightened by the prospect of the return of your favourite show or, even better, indulging in new series. And there are fabulous offerings to start 2015. Tonight looks at them…

THE FIXER (Season four)

Shonda Rhimes is upping the ante this season and betrayal is a cornerstone. The series picks up from the aftermath of Harrison Wright’s (Columbus Short) death.

While Olivia Pope is hit the hardest by the news, Abby Whelan (Darby Stanchfield) has moved on this season. And she has her work cut out for her as the White House Press Secretary. However, that doesn’t mean Cyrus and Fitz give her their stamp of acceptance into the “boys’ club”.

Once again, the key characters find themselves in a web of deception, despair and mistrust.

And Cyrus, the gatekeeper of tittle-tattle, finds himself at the epicentre of an ugly scandal. It’s a slew of salacious shenanigans. Tune into M-Net at 7.30pm tonight.

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER (Season one)

WHILE on the subject of Rhimes, as a producer she has been generating hype with How to Get Away With Murder, with Viola Davis as her lucky mascot.

Set in a fictional law school, the premise centres on the life of Annalise Keating (Davis), a criminal law professor/defence lawyer. Each episode sees all the people in Keating’s life unwittingly entangled in her quest to solve a string of crimes. This airs on Vuzu Amp on Mondays at 8pm.

DOMINION (Season one)

THIS apocalyptic supernatural action, shot in Cape Town, has registered with viewers because it has South African talent – Kim Engelbrecht (Sgt Noma Banks) and Carl Beukes (archangel Gabriel) in the show.

An adaption of Legion (2010), Dominion starts 25 years in the future.

In the battle, archangel Michael chose to save humanity and their city, Vega, from being destroyed by Gabriel and his new army.

The CGI is impressive as is the cinema-tography. If you want an action-packed series with a forbidden romance and addictive drama, this should whet the appetites.

THE NEWSROOM (Season three)

Aaron Sorkin’s ingeniously penned drama stars Jeff Daniels. Of course, the tension between Will McAvoy (Daniels) and his executive producer MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer) has been resolved – he popped the question last season.

But that doesn’t mean they won’t be at each other’s throat this season. After all, with breaking news comes quite a few breaking points for our favourite characters. The show airs on M-Net Edge at 8pm next Tuesday.

UZALO (Season one)

SABC1 will launch a new telenovela, Uzalo. Shot and set in KZN, it centres on the Mdletshe and Xulu families: one does the work of God while the other is rooted to a life of crime. It’s a provocative drama where contradictions, loyalty, blind ambition, bloodlines and lies form the character make-up of the community. Bheki Mkhwane (Pastor Melusi Mdletshe) and Mpumelelo Bhulose (Muzi Xulu) are the patriarchal rivals. Leleti Khumalo will make her comeback with this show. Airs Monday to Wednesday at 8.30pm from February 9.
