IF you do not have a DStv Explora decoder then now is a good time to get one. Not only is it close to Christmas, but the enhancements that the folks at DStv and Multichoice have cooked up will change your life.

Last week they launched a suite of connected services that sought to unlock an entirely different way of consuming TV content.

With connect services we are looking at a future where the viewer will be able to access 300 titles on DStv Catch Up which are made instantly available through satellite services. Okay, let’s break this down.

You know how people in Europe and the US always get the shows that we like before us? Well, this is about to change because with the Explora being connected to the internet from last weekend, customers can gain access to the 300 titles of the latest, top-rated movies and other exclusive material on DStv Catch Up Plus. This, in turn, doubles the amount of content available on DStv Catch Up Plus.

So, as it stands you can choose up to 25 titles from the DStv Catch Up Plus library which you can then download to your Explora so that you can watch them whenever you feel like it.

For some TV addicts, 300 titles of anything will not be not enough and Multichoice bore that in mind and promised that in the first half of next year, the number will double.

You must really love your TV viewing if you were to say that 600 titles are not enough! We are talking about entire series of The Sopranos, The Walking Dead, Rookie Blue, Dog with a Blog, Ultimate Spider-Man and Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion 2014. There will also be a variety of shows for the sports fans.

Yet that’s not all. Remember those occasions when you forgot to set a reminder to record a show and worried that you might miss it? Well, thanks to the new remote recording feature, you can record whatever you need to even if you are away from the physical location your Explora.

From next month, through an app called DStv NOW, DStv Premium customers will enjoy the magic that comes with remote recording. The app will allow them to activate remote recordings from wherever they may be in case they forgot to do that at home. The app works perfectly well from all iOS and Android mobile services. For now you will be able access about a dozen channels on the DStv Catch Up content.

Since we are talking about an internet connection for access to the content available on DStv, there will be a need to hook up your Explora to either an existing internet router by ethernet cable or you will have to buy the DStv wi-fi connector which costs R399. The allows you access to DStv Catch Up Plus which will be integrated in your monthly DStv Premium subscriptions. However, your internet charges will be separate because your provider has rates pegged at how much you use.

The other thing to note is since this innovation is only coming out now, the services will not be as fast as intended thanks to the slow broadband speeds.

With all these advancements, who needs a pirated copy of that show or film from the streets?
