Johannesburg - Ghost is coming to the small screen.

The tale of a supernatural love between Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore that won two Oscars and a legion of dedicated fans, is being made into a TV series.

This week, it was announced that a pilot has been commissioned. It is not yet clear how the writing team will translate the movie into a TV series. The writers tasked with bringing Ghost back to life have considerable experience: Akiva Goldsman’s screenwriting credits include I Am Legend and A Beautiful Mind, while Jeff Pinkner has worked on the television shows Fringe and Alias.

In the film version of Ghost, Swayze plays Sam, a man who is murdered and teams up with a medium called Oda Mae (memorably played by Whoopi Goldberg) to communicate with his grieving fiance Molly (Moore) and avenge his death.

The film is most famous for its erotic pottery scene, which features the classic tune Unchained Melody.

“We wanted the love scenes not to be about sex but to be about the communication and connection with another human being through the eyes, and I think that came off,” the now late Swayze once said in an interview.

“I was thinking about being a young actress and getting this script that Joe Rubin had written and finding it so fascinating and different,” Moore said about one of her most memorable roles.

“It’s a love story, and it’s a guy – a dead guy – trying to save his wife – and there is a comedy part, but really it’s a love story.

“And I thought, ‘Wow, this is really a recipe for disaster. It’s either going to be something really special, really amazing, or really an absolute bust’.

“What’s interesting is that I learned one really big lesson on this film, which is that I went to see it and everyone was moved.

“It's something that touches people's heart, it transcends and has comforted people's soul in great loss and it has instilled a sense of hope and magic that those we love are always still with us.”
