Katch it With Khanyi hits small screen

Khanyi Mbau and Kim Kardashian could have been twins if not for their ethnic differences. Both girls grab life by the horns and go after what they want using any means necessary.

Of course, in her quest for stardom, Kardashian did everything from the Ray J sex tape, the short marriage to that NBA star Kris Humphries that nobody cares about, to having a baby with Kanye West. She is one of the most googled celebrities, although Miley and Rihanna pose fair competition. Either way, moral or not, Kim K is coining it and she doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon.

Back to Khanyi Mbau. Let’s dissect this being and find out exactly what it is about her that causes all the controversy. Okay, so she doesn’t have the Kardashian money, but locally she is just as famous. She’s done the acting, the singing, a book deal and now she has a talk show! Even Oprah would be jealous. Well, not really, but you know what I mean.

This woman is barely 30 (so she says) yet she has lived a life full of opportunity no matter how much negativity she attracts. In some twisted way she almost seems to ride the bad press like a wave.

Her love for cosmetic procedures is something some media houses are obsessed with reporting on. Then again, she must also enjoy the attention as pictures of her showing off her new features have surfaced.

Few people can say they have spent millions like trust fund babies do. For some of us, the closest we will get to a Lamborghini is watching The Fast and the Furious. For a limited time, Mbau “owned” one of these Italian beauties and was the envy of the town.

You may be wondering why we are doing a Wikipedia number on Mbau. Well, once again she is adding another mark to her CV with a TV show, Katch it With Khanyi, which will air on e.tv’s new channel, eKasi+.

Of course, she’s entering territory that has been dominated by the likes of Noleen Maholwana-Sangqu so it will not be easy for the newbie to make her mark overnight.

The first episode aired last Friday and Mbau’s guest was diva Kelly Khumalo. Anyone who knows a thing or two about this pair would be aware that they don’t get along at all, or at least they didn’t. To have them in one room for a while where one dominates the other was a fine example of what good TV is all about.

In social circles, Mbau is known as a quirky and blunt person who will say some of the most unexpected things that can make a room uncomfortable to be in. She brings that element to the show and most of her prey is caught off-guard.

Look out for an upcoming episode with Julius Malema in which the two discuss issues that will appeal to all South Africans.

As for Mbau, we only hope she remains a little longer on this project to make it a formidable product.

• Katch it With Khanyi airs every Friday at 5.30pm on eKasi+.
