Lively praise for TV horror show

The Walking Dead shuffled onto TopTV last week, awash in the glorious smell of rotting flesh and fresh gunpowder. The show runs on Fox FX Tuesdays at 9.20pm.

It's a vital coup, scoring a fresh TV show that's proving to be both critically acclaimed and popular across the world.

If TopTV is going to remain competitive and lure new subscribers, it's going to have to keep scoring hot new shows.

The series is based on the comic book series of the same name by Tony Moore, Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard. Frank Darabont, director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, is behind the development.

Bits of the show were shot in South Africa, so keep an eye out for Kalahari dust.

The show kicks off with police officer Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) waking up from a coma to find the world plunged into a zombie apocalypse. Every corpse on the planet has been re-animated and they spend their days shuffling about looking for living human flesh to feed on.

Grimes sets out to search for his wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and son Carl (Chandler Riggs), meeting other survivors along the way.

He also meets up with his best friend and ex-partner Shane Walsh (Jon Bernthal), who has mixed feelings about the return of Grimes. Together, they need to lead survivors around the post-apocalyptic wasteland to find a new home where they are safe from the hungry ghouls.

The series has been praised for its dark tone, cinematography to rival film and sharp writing. The characters gain in complexity as the battle for survival intensifies and morality is remoulded.

The tone stays away from knuckle-headed horror clichés and focuses on the reality of survival. It's about the dead but the themes revolve around humanity, loyalty and even love.

At the time of writing, a second season was being discussed and was looking likely.
