Cape Town - A new soapie has blown into Cape Town, and in a first for M-Net, it’s set in Cape Town.

Suidooster, a new Afrikaans-language series, will premiere at 8pm on November 16 and will air on kykNET & kie (channel 145) three nights a week, providing stiff competition in the soapie market.

SABC2’s popular 7de Laan airs at 6.30pm. Details of Suidooster’s plot, cast and characters have not yet been released.

Karen Meiring, M-Net’s head of Afrikaans, made the announcement on Wednesday

.

Suidooster brings KykNET’s soapie tally to three: Binnelanders (which is set in Pretoria), Villa Rosa and now Suidooster.

Villa Rosa has been cancelled and will be replaced by a new soap in April.

Meiring said: “Binnelanders and Villa Rosa, our two popular kykNET soaps, were set in Gauteng – it’s time we expand our production footprint nationally. Suidooster allows us to do this, while still delivering a compelling story for our viewers.

“Even though the show calls the Western Cape home, its storylines are universal – we look forward to sharing this story with Afrikaans viewers throughout South Africa.”

The show is produced for KykNET by Gambit Films, which will premiere its new short film Kleingeld at the Silwerskermfees in Camps Bay.

Gambit director Travis Taute said in a statement: “It is a tremendous honour to be tasked with creating a brand new soapie for kykNET and is a great acknowledgement that our hard work is paying off... We’re determined to deliver on the confidence that M-Net has placed in us. We’re focused on ensuring that Suidooster becomes must-watch Afrikaans TV entertainment.”

* Suidooster will be screened three days a week from November 16 on channel 145. See kykNET.tv.
