Take a break from your comfort zone

WE’VE all dreamt of the ultimate holiday and then realised it’s never going to happen, mainly because we can’t afford it.

So Tourism KwaZulu-Natal and the Thebe Tourism Group have decided to offer South Africans the chance to win a dream holiday in KZN through an innovative new reality TV show.

But you have to step up to a few challenges to get to that grand prize in Holiday Swap KZN.

The show will air on SABC1 in February. But the fun starts now as organisers made the call for entries at a media launch last week.

Spero Patricios, managing director of Launch Factory (the producers) explained how it works: “We put out a call to entry and are asking you and two friends or family members to send in an entry. Tell us what your best holiday in KZN would be, what would you like to do? During that process we also ask you what your likes, dislikes and fears are. From the thousands of entries we’ll get, we will then swap out your holiday.

“So, for example, if party A wants to go shark diving and they have a fear of heights, and party B wants to go bungee jumping and have a fear of sharks, we swap the two holidays to create the drama, against the backdrop of KZN. So, the team that fears heights will have to do bungee jumping. The show is quite simple, one part is a task, the other is a challenge,” he explained.

“The challenges are time- and points-based. And if you don’t do the task, you can’t move on to the next station and therefore you can’t win the prize. The ultimate prize is the dream holiday that was submitted on the entry, plus a few five-star add-ons which Tourism KZN have added.”

Each team must comprise three people between the ages of 18 and 45, one team member must have a driver’s license, and be either a South African citizen or permanent resident of South Africa. The team must also submit photos showing off their holiday spirit and personalities.

But wait, there’s more…

This reality show is one part of a multifaceted plan to encourage holidaying locally among middle-income earners.

Tourism KZN, The Thebe Tourism Group and their partners have created holiday packages, based on those that will be displayed through the TV show, which viewers can buy into.

So by watching the show you get a preview of some of the holiday options on offer in KZN. If you like, you can SMS the Holiday Swap team after a show and arrange a lay-bye-like savings plan or a credit-like plan.

But for now, the focus is on getting the ball rolling with the call for entries.
