FOR A while, a good friend has been asking for help to crack it into the entertainment industry. Her calling is fashion design and her niche is African attire.

She is very talented and she fuses traditional designs with modern styles, making her outfits distinctive. The one thing that has been delaying her launch to superstardom is the uncertainty that comes with dealing with people in entertainment.

Like any young designer, Yanai proposed that she approaches local celebrities to see if they would try out her work when they attendflashy events. While that’s not a bad idea, there are some side effects that come with it.

You will hope that, according to the agreement, the celebrities will mention who dressed them and return the attires. Sometimes this never happens and, as seen of late, many designers have been crying foul because celebrities are giving them a raw deal.

Let’s see if these are real issues on MTV Base’s SA’s Fashionistas, which now airs on Mondays. We meet all the local celebrities who are stylish and they walk us through the thought process of their looks. Some of the best-dressed people in the country include Bonang Matheba, who has the talented Gert-Johan Coetzee in her corner. It comes as no surprise that on any given day, the TV personality is always flawless.

Another interesting person to look out for is MTV’s Nomuzi Mabena, who has been boldly bald for as long as we have known her on TV. Mabena shies away from the elegant long-dresses look and prefers short outfits that suit her well. That is coupled with a lot of jewellery that gives her a punk-rock look that few can pull off.

Singer and TV presenter Nandi Mngoma (pictured) is also one to look out for. She came onto the scene with guns blazing as she is not only beautiful, but has her own unique style that works for her. Her love for the continent is always obvious based on how well she cleans up.

DJ Zinhle is another great case of style and innovation. Very few people can come close to the Kalawa queen as she always has something up her sleeve. Over the years, the musician has carved her own niche, having brands such as Legit roping her in as an ambassador.

It would be great to see these women and some men who know how to make clothes work for their bodies. We hope to learn a thing or two from them.

This show is for designers too, such as the friend who is trying to crack it into the industry. It gives them some direction on where they should go with their craft as not all celebrities are the same.

Overall, if fashion is your thing and you want to know the creative process behind some of your favourite celebrities’ fashion sense, SA’s Fashionistas is for you.

SA’s Fashionistas airs every Monday at 8pm on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322).
