Too much real estate for our boy Maps

TWO THINGS are every young person’s concern when they finish tertiary studies: a car and a home. It would be great to own both as early as possible, but that doesn’t always happen. Instead, we are almost tied to debt till we die in our quest to own these assets. What if I told you that this could change?

In SABC3’s newest show, you could actually win yourself a home.

In Win a Home, presented by Cindy Nell-Roberts, Tumi Voster and Maps Maponyane (pictured), each week we see different properties being decorated by four design apprentices who are mentored by four experts.

The presenters all cover different sections of the show with Nell-Roberts looking into inspirational spaces to trigger your imagination when you next want to pimp out your place.

Voster looks at the competition aspect of the show, where she keeps us up to date with what’s going on with the design apprentices.

Maponyane then comes in the flats side of the show, where he follows the progress of Steyn City’s designer while under way with renovation of a flat from an empty shell to an expensive-looking living space. This space is up for grabs for one lucky viewer at the end of the Win a Home season.

On one hand, it is really refreshing that we have model-turned-TV-hosts such as Maponyane, but it is also con- cerning the pace he is moving at with his TV ambitions. If he is not training you on a TRACE Sports show, he is talking soccer in an SABC1 soccer show.

If you want to chat to your friend on the phone, you might bump into him on the WeChat promotion. Let’s not even talk about Jet Stores’ summer catalogue.

The exposure, while it is great for the individual and their CV (their wallet too), it is a bit inundating to the viewer.

Remember the time we saw Pearl Thusi just about everywhere? That did well for her personally, but it was too much for the viewer.

Like Thusi, Maponyane is almost headed in that direction because, let’s face it, what does he really have to do with a show such as Win a Home? He is sporty, so it will be understandable if he were to give training tips for fans who want a chiselled body like his.

He can host as many soccer shows as he likes because not only is he the son of a soccer legend, but he, too, played the game well.

As a model, he can still present shows on style and trends. He can act too, a thing he has done in the past. That said, let’s not kid ourselves and say he can do it all because no one can. Khaya Mthethwa hosts a gospel show because he is Christian.

Carol Manana does all things sport because it’s been in her DNA since she was young. These people stay in their lanes and do well there because they take time to hone their skills. Maponyane, on the other hand, runs the risk of being spent and overexposed by the time he hits 30.

He is good at most of the things he does, but it would be great if he was a master of one.

• Win a Home airs every Thursday at 8pm on SABC3.
