Wedding bells are ringing for queen of the airwaves Redi Direko. She is getting hitched in December after her boyfriend of four years - Brian Tlhabi - proposed on Valentine's Day.

The 32-year-old Radio 702 talk show host confirmed yesterday that she became engaged on Sunday.

Direko told Sowetan on Thursday that her man proposed on Valentine's Day at a jewellery store.

Tlhabi, a general practitioner in Soweto, is a divorced father of two.

An excited Direko said Tlhabi asked her to accompany him to a jewellery store so he could buy her a Valentine's Day present.

She was looking at earrings when he asked her which ring she liked.

"I chose a ring and he bought it and proposed on the spot."

Direko, who confessed to not being romantic, said she was excited but not surprised.

"We have already been living together for a year and he introduced me to people as his better half. So I kind of expected him to propose at some stage."

Direko said people who knew them were not completely surprised either when she broke the news.

She said the wedding ceremony would be in December because at the moment she was preoccupied with preparing to run the Comrades and Two Oceans marathons.

And she will take her new husband's surname.

"My listeners will have to get used to my new surname because I want to have the same surname as my husband and kids when I get them."

Direko anchors some of the most influential programmes both on radio and television.
