Competitions:

The fifth instalment of the Unisa National Piano Competition will include a jazz piano category running parallel to the traditional classical category. It will take place from July 11 to 18 in the ZK Matthews Great Hall on Unisa’s Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria. Senior piano students 28 years and younger are invited to submit entries by February 27 to the Unisa Music Foundation. Prizes total R190 000. Panellists include Ruth Goveia, Malcolm Nay, Elna van der Merwe and Wessel van Wyk with Neil Gonsalves, Paul Hanmer, Roland Moses and Andre Petersen on the jazz piano panel. Professor Karendra Devroop, deputy director of the Unisa Music Foundation, will serve on both panels. Competitions

The third Len van Zyl Conductors’ Competition will take place in 2015/16. Open to South Africans not older than 33 on January 1, 2016. It offers performance opportunities and master classes with international conductors; the semi-finalists and finalists perform with the CPO and the winner receives an all-expenses paid one-month internship with the Philadelphia Orchestra in America and two months of study at Northwestern University in Chicago with Victor Yampolsky. Entry forms are available at www.cpo.org.za. Closing date March 15. The chosen will participate in the preliminary round in June in Cape Town, semi-finals and finals in February, 2016.
