A fairytale that never seems to get old is Sleeping Beauty. And along the way, there have been many adaptations of it like Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie. And now, The Dingalings return with their version which runs at the Catalina Theatre until July 18.

Featuring Koobeshen Naidoo, Henry Ramkisoon, Nirvana Naidoo, Nickiel Ramkisoon and Katinga Buserello, the play is directed by Kumseela Naidoo.

In an interview with Tonight, Henry describes his character: “I play the role of the good fairy, who is tasked with ensuring that the forces of good prevail in the kingdom of Foreverland. The good fairies avert the curse of the evil witch which would have seen Sleeping Beauty, the princess, die at the age of 16. As the good fairy, I also bring some comic relief to the story with fun antics and audience interaction.”

The actor reveals some of the themes that the show touches on: “Sleeping Beauty is the story of good versus evil and shows the triumph of good in the face of adversity. It is a heartwarming story that has survived throughout history and teaches children good, old-fashioned values. The play also deals with current themes and issues and takes the children on a journey of adventure and discovery.”

As for the highlights of working on a production such as this, Ramkisoon says it’s always a pleasure to entertain children: “They are easily engaged in a good story and enthralled by the fantasy and magic of theatre.

“They are also quite willing to be active participants in the action and we create that opportunity for them in this production. So the play has enough to wow the youngsters and keep mums and dads entertained as well.”
