AMSTERDAM BAR AND GRILL: The Amsterdam Comedy Club hosts a five-minute showdown on Wednesday. See 10 up-and-coming Durban comedians do their hottest five-minute set as they compete for a cash prize and bragging rights. Winner will be determined by the judges and an audience vote. IZULU THEATRE: The widely acclaimed Bhagwan Gave Me this Life, written and directed by Vivian Moodley and starring stage actor Pranesh Maharaj, is at the iZulu Theatre from October 31 to November 2 with shows 8pm on Friday, 7pm on Saturday, and 2pm and 6pm on Sunday. Set in Inanda in 1981, the story is about a widower, Balram, whom the audience meets at a major turning point in his life. Tickets cost R120 and are available at Computicket, Shoprite/ Checkers and the Sibaya Box Office.

CATALINA THEATRE: Thabiso Radebe’s 7inch Stilettos, a sequel to High Heels with Balls, sees Radebe and Sisanda Tshali collaborating with fine artist Sphephelo Mnguni. 7inch Stilettos circles Joyani Maqa, a 25-year-old homosexual who chooses a path that destroys him. He flees home after his family have been murdered. Living on the streets, he’s involved in the sex trade, drug use and murders. His choices have become a burden to him as he seeks a direction to a better future. Produced and directed by Thabiso Radebe, 7inch Stilettos will have two performances at the Catalina Theatre at Wilson’s Wharf at 7pm on October 31 and November 1. Pattundeen Theatre (Aryan benevolent homes – Chatsworth): The Natya Kalalayam Academy of music and dance will be staging Samyuktam, a Kathak and Bharat Natyam dance performance by Shri Manesh Maharaj and Srimati Yshrene Moodley at the Truro Hall (Pietermaritzburg) at 5.30pm on November 1 and at 5pm on November 2. Samyuktam juxtaposes two of India’s most cherished and loved classical dance forms, Bharat Natyam and Kathak, highlighting their similarities and differences. THE RHUMBELOW THEATRE (Umbilo and PMB): After the huge success of her Edith Piaf production, Daniele Pascal presents Pascal Sings Brel. In the Francophone world, Brel has left an enduring influence on music and culture and has inspired musicians worldwide. The songs in this production encompass most of Brel’s career, from difficult beginnings to the glorious one-man shows at the Olympia and Carnegie Hall. It also reflects Brel’s various moods, from the sweet bitterness of I loved to the simple sorrow of a man alone in Marieke and the tenderness which always reappears in Brel’s songs in La Tendresse. Daniele is accompanied on piano, narration and backing vocals by musical director Pieter van Helslandt, a 2014 Woordfees Award nominee. RHUMBELOW THEATRE (Westville Country Club): This year marks a special milestone for South Africa’s much-loved Blarney Brothers, the legendary Durban-based Irish group. Now celebrating their 40th anniversary, the Blarney Brothers remain at the forefront of the South African entertainment industry. Comprising siblings Paul and Damien McIlroy and fellow band member Tony Fisher, the group have performed in many world famous venues. Westville Country Club at 2.30pm and 7pm on November 2. THE BARNYARD THEATRE: The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway is rewinding back in time as it prepares to stage the most daring ‘80s rock show ever, 80s Rewind, until January 11. IZULU THEATRE: Get a double dose of Dingalings’ comedy at Sibaya from November 7 to 9. Dingalings Productions, revered for hilarious comedy shows such as Bust(s) and Full of Ship, brings a new double comedy bill with two comedies, The Return of the Boolulu Uncle and The Long and the Short of It, packed into one show. The Return of the Boolulu Uncle is a sequel to the award-winning Boolulu Uncle. In this warm and funny play Senzo Mthethwa takes his audiences on a journey through more episodes in his fascinating life as a young Zulu boy growing up in an Indian home. The Long and the Short of It is a stand-up comedy show that features two of Durban’s finest comedians, Koobeshen Naidoo and Henry Ramkissoon, who are renowned for their off-the-wall, zany comedy. The double bill show carries a 13 age restriction. Shows are at 8pm on Friday, 5pm and 8pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday.
