IT’S been a while since The Charous and Bruinous Comedy franchise has hit the stage, but fans will be happy to hear that a new instalment is set to stage in Durban, boasting some old comedy favourites on the line-up.

The latest edition sees radio jock, Neville Pillay, Mervyn Pillay, Richelieu B, Masood Boomgaard, Arnotte Payne and Liam E bring on the funny.

The show promises to offer a great deal of laughs as the comedians bring their unique insights into living as an Indian or coloured in South Africa, tackle charou and bruinou stereotypes and narrate side-splitting and nostalgic tales.

Boomgaard explained why it’s been a while since he’s brought the show to Durban: “When you’re working with some of the hardest- working comics in the business, scheduling is sometimes an issue.

“A lot of the guys who were originally part of the series are now plying their trade in Cape Town and Joburg so it’s difficult to get everyone together. Not having a show too often can also be a good thing, because then it keeps fans hungry and also allows the comics enough time to come back with new material.”

One of the reasons he thinks the show holds its popularity is due to the comics coming back stronger every time: “It’s also the kind of show where you get to hear unique stories, stories that you don’t necessarily hear at ‘mainstream’ shows.

“When you attend a Charous and Bruinous show, its not just comedy, it’s a cultural adventure. It’s niche and I think that’s what makes the series interesting and appealing.”

Some of the highlights of the show include popular comedian Mervyn Pillay who has joined the line-up for the first time.

“He never disappoints. It’s good to have Richelieu B, who now is based in Joburg, return to Durban for the show. It’s always special seeing him live.”

The show takes place at Sibaya Casino’s iZulu Theatre on Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 5pm.Tickets are R120 and R150 and are available through the Sibaya box office, Computicket and Shoprite Checkers.
