The idea of introducing skateboarding to a rural Zululand community has proved to be a stepping stone to the opportunities tourism can provide.

Rural children who once felt isolated and underprivileged by living in a community with a sport curriculum limited to soccer are now acknowledging the opportunities Indigo Skate Camp is providing.

The Indigo Skate Camp is a youth camp founded to accommodate the growing needs of young skateboarders from Southern Africa. Over the past two years the youth camps have been held at Isithumba village in the Valley of 1000 Hills, where local youths have been awarded skateboards, protective gear and, with their assistance, skateboarding ramps have been built.

The Indigo Skate-A-Thon is to be a celebration of their achievements thus far. With permanent skateboard ramps in the village, residents from surrounding areas are invited to make use of the free facilities and meet new faces in skateboarding.

Day visitors are welcome at no charge, with meals available at R15 per person. The cost for tent campers is R200, within secure camp grounds, or R250 for accommodation in chalets.
