ALL things ghoulish, ghostly, grotesque and gory will stagger along Durban’s beachfront promenade on Friday – but it’s all in good fun, for a good cause.

Friday is Halloween and Durban residents, for the first time, are being encouraged to join the annual global Zombie Walk, which originated in North America and has people dressing up as zombies for a city parade.

The event, starting outside Suncoast Casino, will feature a street party with local DJs, a horror movie, and artistic installations and performances.

A zombie marching band, drummers, stilt-walkers, magicians and costumed actors will lead the parade. All proceeds will go to charity.

In keeping with the theme, the KwaZulu-Natal blood transfusion services, organ donors, the Sunflower Fund (bone marrow transplants) and the KwaZulu-Natal Children’s Hospital (formerly Addington Children’s Hospital) have identified as beneficiaries. The cost is R50 and free for under-12s.

Anyone interested in joining the parade should meet at 5pm today on the promenade at Suncoast Casino, where there will be opportunities to register for blood, bone marrow and organ donations.

The 4km walk will start at 6.30pm. There will be spot prizes for the best costumes, and sweets for trick-or-treating children.

Tickets for the walk and the party (over-18s only) cost R120.

Rivertown will be a party zone, with two stages, bars and an outdoor cinema. - The Mercury
