POPULAR isicathamiya group The Kholwa Brothers are set for an engaging performance at the Playhouse soon.

The concert will feature hits from their three CDs, as well as an audience participatory first half.

The group’s founder, Derrick Mlambo, said the night would begin with the singing of religious hymns, led by the MC.

“We wanted to involve the audience in the show – hence we will begin with the singing of religious hymns. After this, there will be a series of brief speeches by different prominent leaders on the benefits of the arts in a democracy. Since we are also celebrating 20 years of democracy, we wanted to highlight this,” explained Mlambo.

The Kholwa Brothers will then take the stage in the second half.

The word “kholwa” is Zulu for “a believer”.

The Durban-based multi-award-winning group have released three CDs since 2007 and developed their routine after performing locally and internationally.

“We will be performing songs from all three of our albums. We are going back into the studio to record our fourth CD in July.”

Mlambo said they were excited to be performing at the Playhouse again: “We had the first show in 2013. Because of its success, the Playhouse decided that our production should be part of their year calendar, as it develops the youth and promotes our culture and heritage.”

The Kholwa Brothers were formed in 1990 by Derrick Mlambo, who originally hails from Snathing in Pietermaritzburg. He is now based at Inanda near Durban.

The 11-member, youthful, all-male vocal group already have a list of achievements under their belt. These include numerous award, being invited to perform in Brazil for three months, in Germany during the 2006 World Cup, and a host of collaborations with well-known artists, including Mandoza, HHP and Jabu Kanyile and Bayete.

The Kholwa Brothers are Derrick Mlambo, Mlungisi Sishi, Philani Ngcobo, Sbongakonke Khanyile, Lindokuhle Magagula, Nhlakanipho Nzimande, Ngcebo Gumede, Simphiwe Ngcobo, Hopewell Ngcobo, Mthobisi Ndwandwe and Ntandoyenkosi Xulu.

• The Kholwa Brothers will perform at the Playhouse Drama Theatre on May 24 at 7pm. Tickets are just R50, available at Computicket.
