DANCING on tables and chairs, the clinking of glasses or the crowd chanting “We want more” are just a few things you can expect when attending a show at the Barnyard Theatre.

And with the theatre’s new show, Bonfire Hearts, something tells me this tradition will be kept going.

Whether you’re in the mood for modern music or some classics, Bonfire Hearts has it covered. From Taylor Swift and Avicci to Neil Diamond, theatre-goers of all ages can enjoy some of the finest hits until August 23.

The cast of musicians and singers include: Johan Liebenberg, Marvin Nethononda, Corne Cornelissen and Elmé Jacobs; with the band comprising Dene Potgieter (guitar), Calli Thompson (keys), Romeo Moalusi (bass guitar), Paul Cassels (drums) and Carly Nauta (violin).

On the concept of the show, director of Bonfire Hearts, Duck Chowles says: “It’s about music that is about warming the heart – acoustic rock, old and new – from Simon & Garfunkel to Mumford & Sons, and The Eagles to Avicii. Ten years ago, I produced a show called Harvest Moon, and this is the follow-up, featuring acoustic and electric guitars, violin and banjo.”

The Barnyard’s website states that the show introduces lesser- known instruments such as the banjo, the mandolin and the fiddle, in addition to the piano, and acoustic and electric guitars.

With regards to the cast and what will go down on stage, he says the music is the basis of the dialogue that takes audiences on a journey through the best songs of your life: “There’s a talented cast with beautiful voices and violin, brilliant guitarists and music that warms the heart.”

To give theatre-goers a taste of the music featured, expect classics such as Hotel California, Sweet Home Alabama, Sweet Caroline and The Devil Went To Georgia. Instrumental highlights include Duelling Banjos and The Lord Of The Dance. Then, there’s Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and One Direction’s Story of My Life.

Commenting on the song selection, Chowles says: “They were selected around the strengths of the performers. For example, Johan Liebenberg performs a brilliant Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen.”

The atmosphere at the Barnyard has become something that all theatre-goers expect and look forward to. With many shows staged throughout the year, the theatre always manages to get a full house. I ask Chowles how each show is different from the last with the ability to attract audiences.

“Mostly, by the theme of the music. Whether it be Vegas or the ’80s, Abba or Queen, I try and make every show as distinctive as possible with a unique cast suited for the production,” he reveals.
