BARRY Thomson and the The Reals (Dawn Selby, Mali Sewell and Jason Andrews) bring a hot favourite to the Westville Country Club, in association with the Rhumbelow Theatre, when they stage Cold Fact – Rodriguez soon.

The show stages on Sunday at 2.30pm and 7pm and is set to bring the music and history of popular 1970s musician Rodriguez alive on stage.

The show will feature all his remembered songs such as I Wonder, Establishment Blues and Sugar Man, among others, performed by Thomson and The Reals.

Tonight caught up with Thomson (pictured) to hear his thoughts on Rodriguez’s music.

Asked why Rodriguez’s music resonates with people across the board and age line, Thomson said: “He is an anti-establishment artist. His lyrics define the hardships of a working class in Detroit. What always pops up (after the show) is a specific time and place that people remember, when they first heard his music.”

Asked when he first encountered Rodriguez’s music, Thomson said: “I heard Rodriguez on cassette in my mom’s kitchen. I was about 12 years old. I liked it because it sounded totally different to the other music that I’d heard before.”

With a lot planned for this year including performing new tribute shows and releasing a live album with songs from The Reals’ shows from the past two years, Thomson said he also plans to record an acoustic album.
