AN INTERDICT application to prevent 50 000 people from protesting at the anticipated Pharrell Williams concert was due to be heard in the Western Cape High Court on Friday.

A call to boycott the US pop star and producer’s scheduled show at GrandWest Grand Arena on Monday was made by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Against Israel in South Africa (BDS) in July.

The threats of protest action came after the announcement that Woolworths was bringing the artist to the country and that the store was still importing products from Israel.

BDS has held protests inside and outside Woolworths offices and stores around Cape Town.

“Pharrell Williams has kindled great anger among South African human rights activists through his decision to accept business with Woolworths, a company arrogantly refusing to source produce locally instead from Israel,” BDS stated.

Reports suggested that BDS called on the Happy singer to postpone his “boycott-busting trip” until Woolworths stops importing goods from Israel.

While BDS referred to Wednesday’s talks as a “crisis meeting”, the City of Cape Town stated that this was untrue.

Williams will take to the stage in Joburg on Thursday.

Last year, a protest against Israel’s military attacks was held in Cape Town in solidarity with the Palestinians.
