STUART Lightbody brings his new magic show to Kalk Bay Theatre this week.

Devilish, directed by Tara Notcutt (who also directed his previous award-winning show Illusive) “involves almost entirely new material” according to Lightbody.

“Yes, there is more of a narrative. My shows always explore a theme. It is a different narrative,” he said.

The show is described on the Kalk Bay Theatre’s website as “filled with secrets and confessions” and “a diabolical mix of sleight of hand artistry and psychological illusion”.

The secrets and confessions referred to are Lightbody’s own, though it is really just about how he got involved in the industry. Still, as an artist who always puts himself into the stuff he writes, the Devilish audience should get a good sense of who Lightbody is from watching the show.

“It’s all a little bit tongue-in-cheek,” according to Lightbody.

The magician spends most of his time in Cape Town, but also about a quarter of the year touring outside the country. Illusive travelled to Prague and Amsterdam, while an earlier show, Superstition, went to the Brighton Fringe Festival as well as the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Fringe World Festival in Perth, Australia.

He performed Devilish at this year’s inaugural Cape Town Fringe Festival and also briefly upstairs at the Alexander Bar, so what audiences will see at Kalk Bay Theatre has already been tried out and polished.

The hour-long performance will travel to the Fringe World Festival in Perth in January, and probably to the Prague Fringe Festival later next year.

• Devilish is on at Kalk Bay Theatre from tonight, tomorrow and Thursday at 8.30pm and Sunday at 2.30pm. Tickets: R120 from www.kbt.co.za, 079 361 8275, or at the door.
