Zayn Malik is in talks to star in a movie.

The 22-year-old singer - who quit One Direction last month to go solo - is now reportedly looking to try his hand at film making and has already entered into discussions with 'Bend It Like Beckham' director Gurinder Chadha.

Gurinder, 55, told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "We've met and spoken. He trained as an actor first then became part of the band.

"So I think what he'll be doing is staying true to his heart - and that's all you can ever do."

However, Gurinder - who is currently working on Bollywood-inspired 'Bend It Like Beckham: The Musical' - insists she doesn't have a role planned out for the star "just yet".

She explained: "I don't have a part in mind for Zayn just yet but hopefully in the future."

Zayn recently confessed to being a huge fan of Bollywood movies and admitted he's always been a "lover boy" and able to charm the ladies thanks to growing up watching his favourite film 'Bombay'.

The heartthrob - who is engaged to Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards - said: "I was a lover boy around the age of ten. I always had an idea from an early age what it was like to be in love - it was only later I figured it out!"

Zayn recently broke his silence on Twitter for the first time since his departure from the group, with a post that read: "Wanna say thanks to everyone that's been there for me over the last few weeks, love you all.. you know who you are x. The x is a kiss by the way ha it's not a mystery .. sorry to any confused .... (sic)"

He had not communicated directly with fans since 18 March, when he tweeted about the cheating rumours that emerged after a picture surfaced of him holding hands with a girl while on tour in Thailand.

Dismissing the claims that he had cheated on his fiancee, Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards, he wrote: "I'm 22 years old... I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. And there's a lot of jealous f**** in this world I'm sorry for what it looks like x."

Zayn's tweet also follows his first solo appearance since leaving One Direction.

Accompanied by his mother Trisha Malik, the singer stepped out on the red carpet at the annual Asian Awards with a drastic new shaved haircut on Friday night, where he was presented with the gong for Outstanding Contribution to Music by producer Naughty Boy, who is rumoured to be working on the star's solo material.
