A whistle-stop tour through SA

Cape Town - In the late ’80s there was an advertising campaign by South African Tourism, probably one of the best in our history, naming the country as a ‘World In One Country’. It is probably the truest words written about South Africa.

From the majestic Hottentots Hollands mountains to the waterfalls and forests of Mpumalanga, rich fauna and flora, the heritage of many cultures and our architecturally diverse cities, South Africa is one of the few countries where an hour’s drive out a city is rewarded with a host of experiences, attractions and natural beauty.

In today’s time-poor rat race, the opportunity to take a road trip for six months and discover South Africa is likely to never present itself. However, if Phileas Fog was able to take in the world in 80 days, perhaps a Mzansi highlight, whistle-stop trip may satisfy a restless weekend.

Friday Afternoon

Board a mid-afternoon flight to Cape Town and arrive by 6pm. Summer sunsets in Cape Town are late enough to afford enough time to head over to Camps Bay, over Kloof Nek Road. Take a walk on the beach before you sink into a strawberry daiquiri or a glass of fine South African wine at one of many cocktail bars or venues along the Camps Bay Strip. Caprice is strongly recommended for celeb spotting and other beautiful people.

Dine at Blues in Camps Bay or, for something more exotic, head back to Cape Town’s city bowl for some of the best Turkish cuisine this side of Istanbul at Anatoli. Don’t make it a late night because Saturday morning holds more adventure.

Saturday Morning

Get to the airport at 5am and check in for a flight to Durban at 6:30am. With wheels down before 9am, King Shaka’s kingdom awaits. Take a drive down the M4 heading into Durban central and stop off at Umdloti beach for breakfast at one of many restaurants next to the beach. It is one of the more well-priced Durban North Coast holiday towns.

After breakfast, head towards uShaka Marine World. Marvel at the richness of our oceans. It’s an obvious choice when racing against the clock. But, a visit to Durban should never exclude this attraction. Lunch is at Moyo on the pier.

After lunch, head back to the airport and check in for a flight to Jozi where you overnight at home. Head back to OR Tambo International Airport the next morning, again before sunrise.

Sunday

Board a flight to George – it’s Garden Route day. By brunch time you’ll land in one of the most beautiful areas of South Africa. In the heartland of the route, George is within an hour’s drive of Knysna, Mossel Bay and many other roadside attractions. Spend the day exploring and swiping your credit card until it, or your appetite, is maxed out. The Knysna Heads are spectacular – lunch at the mini waterfront and take a stroll through the centre of town.

Head back to George late afternoon and check in at the Hyatt Regency Oubaai – it’s well worth spoiling yourself. Set among the greens of the Oubaai Golf Course, the hotel offers luxury yet intimate accommodation with some of the friendliest staff. The food is great, so if you feel like staying in, it’s well worth the price.

Monday Morning

Skip your first meeting on Monday morning and sleep in a little; rather book a mid-morning flight and get to the office after lunch. After all, a whistle-stop trip is tiring.
