A tranquil refuge

Cape Town - What started out as a scenic drive through the countryside, turned out to be an unexpected adventure.

It’s not often that one finds a smallholding that captures the essence of nature.

But right at the foot of the Langeberg mountains and Karoo koppies lies exactly such an escape – the Ravenna Mountain Retreat. Ravenna is situated off the R62, 28km from Montagu.

It is a perfect place to take time out and absorb the tranquil surroundings offered by nature.

Popular among locals, tourists and small families looking to get away from it all, the farm offers seven fully-equipped, luxury, self-catering cottages.

There is also the option of having breakfast at the main house, a substantial and sociable affair where you will have a chance to meet like-minded weekenders.

One of the cottages, which served as horse stables when the farm was built, is now used as a backpackers’ den.

While the interiors are fairly similar, the accommodation varies in terms of location and privacy.

Standard in all of the cottages is pure cotton linen, electric blankets, fireplaces and overhead fans.

The most secluded of the cottages is the Eden cabin (my favourite) – a romantic cabin that comes with an open-air shower and an infinity pool.

Take a dip in the 23m-long infinity pool or sundowners on the deck at the lake, against the backdrop of red mountains, while the little ones entertain themselves with the jungle gym and friendly farm animals.

The end result is a calm and friendly atmosphere, complemented further by the very pretty farm and mountain setting.

The real treat during our stay at Ravenna was not only the hiking trails with panoramic views, but the tractor rides and egg collecting for the children.

You may not feel the need to leave the smallholding, but for those seeking a bit of adventure there are 4x4 routes in close proximity, horseriding and wine tasting.

Ravenna also offers mountain bike rides, table tennis, a games room or you can have your family portrait taken by Laresa Perlam, the owner of the farm.

Combine the picturesque surroundings with the short professional and educational photography course that is on offer and you have a winning combination for a break away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

After a tiring journey, the relaxing homecoming to Ravenna was more than we expected.

The lodgings were warm, simple, stylish and a constant reminder for us to rest and relax. - Cape Times
