Cape Town – Dutch singer Stef Bos fell in love with Cape Town and has made it his second home. He performed at the Castle of Good Hope this past weekend.

How widely have you travelled?

I’ve travelled through Europe, Africa, North and South America and Asia. Australia and Antarctica is on my to-do-list.

Where was your favourite holiday or time spent abroad?

Zipolite on the Pacific coast of Mexico. After a long day of driving we arrived late at night to a fairy- tale setting.

Your worst experience on a holiday?

Eating sheep eyes in Albania. I couldn’t refuse , because that would have been an insult to the people with whom we were staying.

Your funniest experience?

I wanted to buy a goat as a present for the people who gave me a place to stay in a compound in Mali. Then I discovered that buying a goat means you want to marry the eldest daughter of the family. I found out just in time.

What do you avoid during a holiday?

Crowds, especially Dutch people.

Best meal abroad?

A pizza in the most southern part of Italy with friends from Cape Town in a ugly restaurant in a little village. It was the best pizza I ever had.

Your favourite place to have sundowners on your travels?

On the roof garden of a riad in Marrakech.

Ideal travelling companion?

With people who don’t plan a trip but go with the flow without a guide.

Culture vulture or adrenalin junkie?

I’m only interested in mental bungee jumping and visit museums just before they close when nobody is there.

Greatest travel luxury?

A shack in Senegal with holes in the roof so you can see the moon before you fall asleep.

Holiday reading?

Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, his books are also good for killing mosquitoes and flies.

Favourite drive?

When I was a child I took a trip with my parents to the seaside in Holland. It was one hour but it felt like a trip around the world.

Dream trip?

Time travelling.

Avoid holiday season in Europe. And when you go somewhere, don’t take a guide.
