Cape Town - It’s all hearts and roses this month with Valentine’s Day around the corner and the shops are stocked with brightly coloured cards, special chocolates, stuffed animals, plastic roses and more.

However, when considering what to buy for your loved one, think about all the waste that is generated from these gifts - the plastic, the wrapping paper, the cardboard and ribbons that all ends up on the landfill. Valentine’s Day is not a very environmentally friendly special occasion.

The good news is that there are great ideas for things to do for Valentine’s Day that are special, memorable, fun and don’t leave behind a trail of waste that ultimately damages the environment.

How does a romantic picnic at Kirstenbosch sound? Or a champagne toast on the top of Table Mountain? How about fish and chips for two at Mariners Wharf in Hout Bay or some wine tasting at Groot Constantia. These are just a few of the many things that you could opt for this Valentine’s Day if you hop onboard the red double decker City Sightseeing bus.

City Sightseeing Cape Town, the company that runs the unmistakable and well-known red double decker open-top buses offers their Red City Tour, which takes you to 18 great stops around the City – including the Two Oceans Aquarium, Table Mountain and The Castle of Good Hope (to name but a few) as well as the scenic Blue Mini Peninsula Tour, which takes you to 14 stops around the Peninsula, including Kirstenbosch, Mariner’s Wharf and World of Birds. It also includes a free Wine Tour Bus extension which takes you to three beautiful wine farms in the historical Constantia Valley – Beau Constantia, Groot Constantia and Eagles’ Nest.

The tours operate on a Hop-On, Hop-Off basis, which means you can climb off the bus at any of the stops along the route and then get back on to a later bus when you are ready – so this is tailor made sightseeing which is safe, reliable, affordable, informative and fun. You can also choose to stay on the bus for the full circular route – meaning that in just a few hours you can experience the best of Cape Town and the Peninsula – accompanied by the onboard commentary which explains the story behind the sites and is available in 16 different languages – including a fun kid’s channel.

Good news for those worrying about carbon emissions from the bus is that City Sightseeing is the first carbon neutral bus company in South Africa, so you can be sure that your Valentines outing is a green one!
