Cape Town - Capetonians have known it all along, of course. But now it’s finally dawned on readers of one of Britain’s foremost newspapers that Cape Town is the best city in the world!

After all, where else can you “surf the Atlantic, climb mountains; eat in Michelin-starred restaurants; stay in both historical and super-hip accommodation; indulge in wine tours and still find time to relax on the beach (with or without penguins)”? the Telegraph asked.

“That, of course, is Cape Town.”

It’s the second year in a row the Mother City has won the award.

The three cities nominated by Telegraph readers for this award are all beside the sea, the runners-up in the poll being Vancouver, Canada, and Venice, Italy.

The accolade comes on top of the city being declared the 2014 World Design Capital, when Cape Town will show off its creative best through its artists, artisans, architects and designers of every description.

The Telegraph said Cape Town had memorably shown it could host the 2010 World Cup and had since proved its “appeal to all ages”. - Cape Argus
