Cape Town - There is something magical about someone who loves serving people, that special waiter that offers you service you read about on those TripAdvisor reviews of swanky resorts.

Well luxury resorts in Maldives, you can keep your servers, because the service at The Southern Sun Waterfront in Cape Town is something to write home about.

Greeted with a smile and shown up to my suite, which was very neat and filled with wonderful chocolates, I was terribly exited about the cocktail making session that was booked before dinner.

The mixologist (fancier than a mere bartender I would say) showcased the hotels new brandy-based cocktail menu.

The hotel offers daily cocktail happy hour from 5pm-7pm on the pool deck, which will help if you want to unwind after a long day and miss the traffic. Maybe get a cab home, actually.

*A must try is their signature brandy cocktail, the Cape Strawberry Daiquiri. #yummy

The Yizani restaurant offers buffet and a la carte dining options, but as many a stomach does when it is confronted with so many food options, it contracts and forces you to have only one dish and skip the dessert!

An extensive R100-million refurbishment of this landmark 546-roomed property has been spread over the past two years and will be completed in mid December 2014.

The refurbishment includes the creation of an additional nine luxurious suites, and an elegant makeover of all existing rooms and bathrooms. The new décor, finishes and striking prints of the colourful Bo-Kaap area reflect the hotel’s modern and chic Art Deco style.

The Southern Sun Waterfront GM, Jeff Rosenberg said they were “delighted that the R100m refurbishment will be completed in time for the holiday season. The feedback from our guests has been overwhelmingly positive especially in terms of how the designers have used the various elements from in and around Cape Town to enhance the artwork and graphics in the rooms and corridors”.

The hotel scores top marks for convenience as it is right next door to the CTICC, down the road from the V&A Waterfront and only a short (longish) walk to Long Street.

Breakfast was a little chaotic as all the guest came down for the buffet. From the usual pancakes and salmon to muesli, it’s good enough to fill your tummy till lunch.
