London - British tourists are heading to the sunloungers earlier than ever to beat rival holidaymakers for the best spots.

“Towel wars” have seen Britons in Spain getting up as early as 6am to stake a claim by leaving their towels on loungers, according to a survey.

One tourist at a resort in Alcudia, Majorca, was even observed leaving a towel with the word “reserved” on it. All of the loungers were taken by 8.51am – but there was not a guest in sight, found German newspaper Bild.

The wars have apparently intensified since Bild carried out a similar survey at Lloret de Mar on the Costa Brava last year, when tourists only started leaving towels at 7.36am.

Though the newspaper’s investigators identified only British offenders, it admitted Germans were equal “undisputed masters” of sunbed blocking.
