Cape Town - Cape Town has scooped the fourth spot in Condé Nast Traveler’s annual readers choice awards, jumping from 11th place last year.

The Mother City was named as a “global favourite” based on one million votes from 77 000 Condé Nast Traveler readers. Condé Nast Traveler editor Maria Shollenbarger said Cape Town is “the best city in the world for blending urban culture with the great outdoors”.

“They’re literally a five-minute drive from each other. There’s an exploding food scene, with vegetables, wine, and cheese coming from the gorgeous Cape Winelands,” she added.

Mayoral committee member for tourism Garreth Bloor said the city is “particularly proud” of the achievement and what it means for “touristic potential”.

“As we continue to create opportunities for economic growth, we encourage excellence in our tourism sector,” Bloor said.

The city was also voted as number eight in the top friendliest cities in the world.

Cape Town’s One & Only Hotel stayed true to its name by taking first place in the Best Hotels in Africa category. And Bushmans Kloof in the Cederberg won multiple titles – number six on the list of Africa’s Top 20 Best Safari Lodges and Camps, number four on the list of Best Resorts in South Africa and number 41 on the Top 100 Hotels in the World list. But the number one resort in the world title went to South African Lodge Londolozi in Sabi Sands private game reserve.

“We are so proud of all the players who have come together to earn us such great global recognition,” said chief executive of Cape Town Tourism Enver Duminy.
