Johannesburg - It looked like a steal: R899 for a round-trip business class ticket on South African Airways between Johannesburg and Abu Dhabi.

The online offer, part of a promotional sale at the end of February, was indeed too good to be true.

It was only after SAA had sold the 640 tickets that its management realised there was no way the company could carry passengers at such a price.

SAA spokesman Tlali Tlali confirmed that the company had made an error. A business-class fare (return) cost R30 474.72 on special and the normal price was more than that.

The airline said on Thursday that it erroneously published the incorrect fare and that it was refunding customers who had snapped up the tickets.
