Cape Town - South Africans will have free day access to most national parks this week after devastating fires ripped through the South Peninsula early this year.

The 10th South African National Parks Week, in partnership with FNB and Total South Africa, was officially launched by the Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa, SA National Parks (SANParks) said.

Under the established theme “Know Your National Parks”, it would allow free access to the majority of national parks under SANParks management.

Speaking at the official launch in the Marakele National Park in Limpopo, SANParks chief executive, Fundisile Mketeni said the National Parks Week initiative was intended to cultivate a culture of pride, following the realisation that the majority of citizens were not visiting parks.

Free day-visitor access would be granted on the presentation of a valid ID. Schools are particularly encouraged to visit parks during the week.

SANParks spokeswoman Tarcia Hendricks said not all the parks in Cape Town would be opened during the week but that more information is available on their website: www.sanparks.co.za
