Johannesburg - South Africa did not escape the tremendous worldwide economic turmoil in the past year, but broadly speaking our tourism sector proved its resilience once again. As did the Tourism Enterprise Partnership (TEP), exceeding its expected targets, changing its core funding strategy and undergoing a complete re-engineering of its operational strategy.

TEP chief executive Dr Salifou Siddo says for the financial year 2011/2012, TEP assisted more than 3 000 enterprises of which 70 percent where historically disadvantaged and 30 percent in rural locations. This included training of more than 1 600 enterprises (3 500 individuals), providing direct market access to 626 tourism businesses, mentoring 98 business owners and assisting 368 businesses with funding of R1.6m.

Through its economic development services, TEP assisted these businesses to create over 5 000 jobs and increase revenue by R500m. This continues to demonstrate the benefits of a solid partnership between government and the private sector. - Saturday Star
