London - These fearless divers are some of the most extreme athletes in the world, plunging 27m into a murky lake for the sake of glory.

Putting their bodies on the line, the world’s top cliff divers took turns leaping from the edge of Possum Kingdom Lake, a reservoir west of Dallas, Texas, on the third stop of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.

Male and female competitors performed four dives before the top eight in each division moved on to the finals for a chance to be named the best in their sport.

The sport requires a hearty soul and a head for heights, as the distance between the platform and the water’s surface is enough to make most people squeamish.

The eight-stop tour moves to Copenhagen in June, with events also scheduled to take place in the Azores in Portugal, at Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Polignano a Mare, Italy, and Bilbao, Spain.
