London - A fifth of plane passengers ignore rules on turning off their mobile phone during a flight, a poll has found.

Despite travellers being told to switch off the devices before take-off and to keep them off until after landing, 21 percent admit they do not.

The most common way they flout the rules is by turning a mobile back on sooner than allowed after landing, followed by not switching it off at the requested time, the survey by travel agent sunshine.co.uk found.

Others try to access the internet during a flight or send text messages or make calls while airborne.

Of the 1 793 British adults surveyed, those who did not follow the rules, 86 percent pleaded forgetfulness.

Others said they had disobeyed because they did not believe phone usage actually affects a plane. - Daily Mail
