London - A transatlantic business class flight with meals by a Michelin star chef sounds like a luxury beyond most of our means.

But a small French airline is now offering just that for less than £1 000 (about R18 000) return. La Compagnie is selling return flights between Paris and Newark in New Jersey next month for 1 200 euros.

That is a saving of more than £2 000 on the business class seats offered by carriers such as Air France between the continent and America.

It is also almost one fifth of the £4 584 charged by British Airways and its US partner American Airlines for a business class return flight between London Heathrow and New York. La Compagnie currently operates one flight in each direction per day but plans to operate more.

Its seasonal menu has been created by Christophe Langree of the Michelin-starred Hotel Matignon in Paris.

The airline is one of a growing number hoping to tempt corporate travellers away from the major carriers.
