Johannesburg - Thato “DJ Fresh” Sikwane is a household name who got his big break as a house music DJ in the 1990s. Here he chats about his best holiday memories.

First holiday memory?

I was 8 years old and we came to Joburg for the very first time. My uncle had moved to Soweto. We stayed in the Joburg Hotel and I bought my first Timachi game.

Favourite place in South Africa?

Johannesburg. This is home and there’s no place like home. I just love everything about this city, the nightlife and the weather. It doesn’t get better than home.

Best holiday?

I was working but turned it into a holiday and I took my family with me. We were shooting the Tropika Island of Treasure in Thailand. We’d shoot during the day and I’d go sightseeing during the night. I’d basically get two hours sleep a day. I must say it’s a beautiful country.

What have you learnt from your travels?

We have way more in common than we are different. Never believe all the negative stories you hear about other countries. Every country has its gems.

Ideal travelling companion?

Solo. I enjoy my time alone. Because I’m adventurous and spontaneous, travelling with others is great but you always have to take them into consideration. And if I want to jump off a cliff, that’s exactly what I’ll do.

Beach bum, culture vulture or adrenalin junkie?

I’m a cross between a culture vulture and an adrenalin junkie. I’m a night owl, so wherever I go, nightlife tourism is necessary. The ocean is overrated. Give me sightseeing and nightlife.

Greatest travel luxury?

I always need my iPad as it’s full of movies, series and books.

Holiday reading?

I don’t read much when I’m on holiday. I want to enjoy my trip, to party and let loose. I’m planning to read a book written by Bruce Lee, it’s titled Tao of Jeet Kune Do.

Which place has seduced you?

Lagos, Nigeria. Expect nothing other than a breath of fresh air. And what’s ridiculous is that you travel with fears and expectations due to stories you hear about other cities or countries. But Nigeria is nothing like you expect. It is truly one of the most hospitable countries I’ve travelled to.

Worst travel experience?

Truthfully, I haven’t had any and I always say, on holiday, you need to make the best of what you have and what’s around you.

Best hotel?

A hotel in Dubai. I think it was called The Riviera. They go overboard when it comes to luxury.

Favourite walk, swim, ride or drive?

Driving. I prefer to drive when I’m on holiday. It’s easier for me to familiarise myself with an area. Plus, I always end up finding hidden gems.

Best meal abroad?

When I was in Thailand, I was walking through the streets where there is a variety of cheap, tasty food to choose from.

W here next?

Mauritius, for my brother’s wedding. He lives there and we make a holiday of it when visiting. But places on my to-do list are Tokyo and Hong Kong. I want to travel East more.
